Nationals Preview: Rotax Junior

For Canadian kart racers there is no bigger week on the schedule than the ASN Canadian National Karting Championships and that week is finally here! Racers from across Canada are making their way to Mosport Kartways near Bowmanville, Ontario to compete for Canada’s ultimate title and the glory of being a National Champion. The week long event on the tricky 1.2KM track will be a true test in all categories where high speeds, deep braking zones and plenty of passing will keep drivers on their toes.

The event officially kicks off on Friday with Pfaff SuperPole Qualifying. From there drivers will race in two heat races and a PreFinal before returning on Sunday to compete in the Canadian Championship Finals. It’s going to be an exciting week and for those who cannot attend, stay tuned to CKN all week long for full event coverage!

To kickoff our coverage of Canada’s premier event, we will break down all ten classes competing this weekend, noting some of the favourites, dark horses and special appearances.

Defending Canadian Champion: Gianfranco Mazzaferro (Advanced to Rotax Senior)

The Rotax Junior category has been dominated by two drivers thus far in 2015 as Samuel Lupien and Joe Soranno have won five of the six ECKC races this season. While these two are the favourites coming into the weekend, Roman DeAngelis will be a serious contender as well after winning the Saturday and taking pole Sunday in the most recent ECKC round at Mosport. DeAngelis has been in contention each week and just a little luck away from another major victory.

There are a few wild cards in the field as well as Russell Boyle, Natael Cantin, Alexandre Lacroix, and Raphael Forcier have been fast on occasion this season. Factor in the fast rookie’s in the category like Ryan MacDermid, Matthew Latifi and Nicholas Hornbostel we could see a huge upset if the class’s best falter at any point this weekend.

Front the west this weekend, Alberta’s Matthew Taskinen has made the journey and utilized last weekends Champion Ron Fellows Karting Challenge to get up to speed at Mosport. Look for him to be in the mix as well this weekend.
