The 2013 Eastern Canadian Karting Championship hits the track this weekend for the first of four stops in 2013. Entering its fourth year of competition, the ECKC is Canada’s largest racing series and draws drivers from Ontario and Quebec, as well as the Eastern provinces of Canada and a few of our American friends. This year the series will kick off at Mosport Interntional Karting which is part of Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville, Ontario for the first time as the previous three years have started at Goodwood Kartways. Promising great racing, big grids and plenty of future motorsports talent, the ECKC is the place to be for premier kart racing in Canada.
CKN is if the official media partner of the 2013 Eastern Canadian Karting Championship and has put together it’s official previews to air all this week. Following each event, CKN will have their own version of a Power Rankings for the Rotax Junior, Senior and DD2 classes. Each event, CKN will also select one Junior category and one Senior category driver as their respective ‘CKN ECKC Driver of the Weekend’, earning an article on the website about their weekend.
Wrapping up the Rotax categories, there is another strong field of DD2 Masters set for 2013. Tracking down as many of the entries as possible, CKN presents its preview as well as threats and drivers to watch.
CKN will have a Live Chat operating during the ECKC rounds this weekend at Mosport. Tune in and join the conversation at https://www.canadiankartingnews.com/live
Rotax DD2 Masters
A dozen or more drivers aged 32 or older will hit the track this weekend in the Rotax DD2 Masters category. Seeing many drivers return for another year, it is great to see the class isn’t fading away like it’s two-speed younger brother.
Stuart Clark(Prime Powersports/Maranello) looks to add to his win total as well as defend his class championship while Luc Sauriol (PSL Karting/CRG) is seeking another trip to the Grand Finals, held this year in New Orleans, USA. The always quick Paul Carvalho (PSL Ontario/CRG) should mix things up at the front while Elvis Stojko (Praga Racing Ontario/Praga) makes his Canadian DD2 debut at Mosport after a couple rounds in Florida this past off-season.
Regulars Francis Mondou (IPK Quebec/OK1) and John Cariati (IPK North America/OK1) should keep things interesting while the local Steve Attard (Attard Racing/CRG) could throw a wrench into the action.
Drivers to watch:
Luc Sauriol:One of the most experienced in a class full of experience, Sauriol just needs to stay out of trouble in order to stand on the podium. In doing so, if he’s on his game he should be able to go head-to-head with Stuart Clark as well.
Stuart Clark: The perennial favourite, Clark was victorious at Mosport in 2012 en route to the championship and his second trip to the Rotax Grand Finals. Back for another year with Trevor Wickens Prime Powersports operation, Clark will be looking to make it three straight trips and won’t be happy unless he leaves Mosport with points lead.
Elvis Stojko: The man is a World Champion figure skater and now he hopes to dance his way through a very challenging DD2 Masters division. He’s got great support and could be a threat for victory as the season progress’s.
Francis Mondou: The frenchman took it easy in 2012, mainly sticking to the Quebec region, but he is back and putting a full assault on his ECKC Championship campaign. Mondou knows what it takes to win and could have Clark and Sauriol on their toes.
