The most anticipated event of the Point Pelee Karting Club schedule is now just one month away as PPKC is getting set to once again host its annual Memorial Race. Celebrating the lives of members lost throughout the years, twin races will be run the weekend of June 27-28 at Point Pelee Karting in Leamington, Ontario.
Having taken place annually for a few years now, the Memorial Race has gained popularity throughout the karting community and developed into a very signifcant event. Cash prizes of up to $2000 are awarded to top finishers in select classes, and the prize purse rewards many others as well. And while that could cause celebration in its own right, the Memorial Race is about celebrating much, much more.
The event takes place over two days, with Saturday being PPKC Race 5 followed by practice for the Memorial Race on Saturday night. Run in a different configuration, the Memorial event doubles as PPKC Race 6 the following day. The night practice sessions allow all to sample what’s to come the next day, and of equal if not more importance, they bring all teams, drivers and families together without the hectic activity of a race day on hand.
Sunday’s activities begin with Memorial parade laps, where drivers take to the track with tribute messages for loved ones that have been lost. Other participants, fans and family members line the front straight in a show of respect and support for those lost, and those present. Families then unite on the infield for a group photo before the day of racing begins.
While attention for some may then turn to the customary motions of a race day, for all the day should serve as a reminder that karting is not about winning the day or a ticket to race in a land far away. It is about family, community and sharing the joy of a shared passion, a time when lifelong friendships are made, and no win can make up for the loss of others.
