The Plot Thickens with ECKC Championships On The Line: Senior Classes Preview

CKN’s resident mathematician Neelan Nadesan has broken down the ECKC championship standings heading into this weekend’s series finale at the Jim Russell Karting facility in Mont Tremblant, Quebec. Take a look and see who is in and who is out of the championship picture with our look at the Senior classes.

Junior class previews

Rotax Max Senior

Heading into the season finale in Mont-Tremblant, Rotax Senior class rookie Cedrick Lupien holds the championship lead by 25 points ahead of three-time class champion and 2015 Canadian National Champion Marco DiLeo. Both drivers have victories and consistently been on the podium this season giving them high points totals.

The only driver with an outside chance of winning the championship is Gianfranco Mazzaferro, as he sits 106 points behind championship lead Lupien. With a maximum of 500 points left on the table it is still possible for Mazzaferro to win the championship but he needs some luck and steal the Grand Finals ticket away from Lupien with DiLeo already qualified.

Rotax Max DD2

Rotax DD2 has been dominated by Jeffrey Kingsley, who has is just under 200 points ahead of second place driver Tyler Kashak. To make it even easier for Kingsley heading into this weekend, Canadian Champion Kashak will not be racing in Tremblant after starting his second year of University at the beginning of September.

With Kashak out it means Fred Woodley, Alessandro Bizzotto and Didier Carre will all have a chance to take second in the ECKC championship although it appears that Kingsley is a lock for the title and the ticket to the Rotax Grand Finals.

Rotax Max DD2 Masters

The DD2 Masters class is extremely close as Luc Sauriol currently has a ten point lead including drops ahead of multi-time ECKC Champion Stuart Clark heading into this weekends finale in Mont Tremblant. However Clark has opted to sit out this weekends race following his victory at the Canadian Championships.

Elvis Stojko is currently third in the category and has a slim chance of winning this weekends championship beginning 135 points behind Sauriol but he too has decided not to make the trip to Tremblant, all but securing the title and the Grand Finals ticket to Sauriol.

Briggs & Stratton Senior

The Briggs & Stratton Senior championship has been the closest it has been in the past several ECKC seasons. Currently Jean-Francois Lafontaine has a 57 point lead ahead of both Kyle Herder and Simon Belanger. It’s going to be a great battle to watch as all three drivers have been at the front of the field all season long.

The reigning ECKC champion Jonathon Treadwell sits fifth in championship, just behind Kyle Edgar, with no shot at the title.

Regardless of the title fight, Briggs & Stratton Senior has proven to be the class to watch this season with so many drivers showing potential to win every time on track. No less than 58 different drivers have entered the category this season with even more drivers expected to join in the Briggs & Stratton action in 2016!

Briggs & Stratton Masters

Michael Rogers leads the Briggs & Stratton Masters championship by 110 points over David Anderson, two fellow competitors who have reunited a battle from over a decade ago. But with the big lead, a consistent weekend by Rogers should help him secure the championship and confirm K&K Karts successfully defends the Masters title.

Steve MacVoy, James Dunn and Corey Walsh enter the weekend inside the top-five but all three drivers will need remarkable weekends to jump to the top of the podium and become class champion.

Racing gets underway on Saturday in beautiful Mont-Tremblant. With two full days of racing, no title is secure just yet and as we’ve seen in the past, anything is possible at the ECKC finale.
