Saskatoon WCC Karting Canada/Italkart Report
The Karting Canada/Italkart team set there sights on the third and forth rounds of the WCC on the weekend of July 1st – 4th. With the Saskatoon track being the home track for the team, they were hopeful for good results.

Saturday July 3rd

Scott Campbell and new addition to the team Travis MacDonald were the two drivers in Rotax Sr. After qualifying they found themselves in 4th and 6th. In the prefinal Scott made the move up to 3rd but Travis found some bad luck and would end up in 23rd. Scott would be starting on the inside for the final and would benefit from that after having a great battle with Bryce Choquer and would come across the line with a 2nd place and fast lap of the race. Travis Had a very strong run through the field until another driver made contact with him and sent Travis spinning off the track into a huge water puddle. He would get himself going again and would end up with a 16th spot running times to be in the top 4.

In the Mini Max Class the team had Colton McCaughan. He had some struggles but with the help of the team was able to make some changes and would qualify 4th. In the prefinal he was in an intense fight and would end up with a 5th spot but would have the fastest lap of the race. In the final the weather decided to open up and with the track wet Colton would make a great run and end up on the podium with a 3rd place finish.

In the DD2/DD2 Masters class the team had 3 drivers. Scott Campbell and Travis MacDonald did double duty and Ayrton Triolo had a weekend off of racing Formula 1600’s in Ontario and decided to try out the DD2 class. Qualifying went well with Campbell on pole, MacDonald in 4th and Triolo in 5th. The prefinal would be Campbell out front the entire race. MacDonald had a right front tire going down and tried to hold off the challenge from the other drivers but would end up in 5th with Triolo right behind in 6th. Again in the final Scott would lead from flag to flag and take the win with a 9.523 second margin. Travis would move up on spot to 4th and would be in touch with 2nd and 3rd the entire race. Ayrton would have some struggles and would cross the line in 8th.

The last class the team had a driver in was the Junior 2 Honda class. Dalton Hubred had a great qualifying effort in 2nd spot. He would have a intense race in the prefinal with 3 other divers and cross the line in 3rd. The top 4 drivers finished the race only .470 seconds apart from first to fourth. In the final Dalton would win the race but upon tech inspection he would get DQ’d for not having the correct information on his tech sheet.

Sunday July 4th

Scott would again qualify in the 4th spot and Travis would have to qualify in the slower group because of his finishing position from Saturday. He would still manage to be 8th overall. In the prefinal Campbell would get some good luck as the 2nd and 3rd spot drivers would make contact in turn three. He made the jump to second and did not turn back. Travis again had some tough luck with a 11th spot finish. He once again ran times to be in the top 5. The final would be very good for the team as Campbell had a good battle with another driver and came out with another 2nd place finish. MacDonald would make a great run though the field and come across the line in 7th place.

Colton had a struggled a little in qualifying and would end up in 4th again. In the prefinal he would make up one spot to start on the inside of the second row for the final in 3rd. With not to much drama Colton would continue his consistent runs and finish again on the podium in 3rd place.

The DD2 drivers again tried there best with Campbell on pole, MacDonald in 4th and Triolo in 6th after qualifying. In the prefinal it would be Campbell taking the win and MacDonald making the move to 3rd spot. Triolo had some kart trouble and retired after the 5th lap and would start the final from 8th spot. The final was a totally different race. MacDonald would make a early move on Campbell on the second lap. Campbell and the next 2 drivers would battle it out for a couple laps as MacDonald pulled away. Scott would finally break free and reel in Travis. With only a couple laps left Scott made a move down the inside for the lead. Then 2 laps later MacDonald would make the same pass back in the same corner. Campbell again had to fight for the second spot with the other two drivers breathing down his neck. At the end it would be MacDonald winning his first DD2 race at the WCC in his brand new Italkart. Campbell would be right behind in second. Through all of this, Triolo had a lonely race by himself in 5th spot.

Dalton really struggled in qualifying with a 9th spot. They would try to find some speed and in the prefinal would find a little to move up to 7th. Finally he found the magic setup in the final but it was a little to late as he crossed the line in 5th place but running the fastest lap of the race.

Team Karting Canada/Italkart was very pleased with the results at the WCC race in Saskatoon and look forward to the final two rounds in Edmonton July 29th – August 1st.
The team has a good chance of having a couple drivers standing on the Championship podiums.
