PR: 2014 ASN Nationals: Team K&K Just Misses Podium in 2 of 3 Briggs Classes

Team K&K had good results at the ASN Canadian Nationals this past weekend at Mt Tremblant, despite some bad luck. The team consisted of Braxton Terry, Andre Fiorini and Victoria Stutsky (Junior), Jon Treadwell and Marc Stehle (Senior) and Keith Barrick, Kyle Aulenback and Steve McVoy (Masters).

Briggs Masters:

Current ECKC points leader Keith Barrick led the way with quick practice sessions, and a Super Pole result of 3rd starting the heats. A last corner attempt for the win in Heat 1 resulted in Barrick being relegated to 4th. Heat 2 saw Barrick once again challenging for the lead and contact dropped him to a 13th place finish. Barrick’s luck continued with a flat tire, after being hit early on, in the 3rd Heat and finished well down in the order. A starting position of 11th in the final and a very poor tire pressure choice, resulted in a 7th place finish for Barrick.

Steve McVoy, who qualified 7th, won Heat 1 and was 2nd in Heat 2. He would have secured the pole position for the final with his finish in Heat 3, but as luck would have it, lost his header on the last lap, was DQ,d and awarded last place points. As a result, he had to start the final in 10th and had a great drive to a 4th place finish. Steve was quick all week.

Kyle Aulenback, who qualified 6th, had a rough start in Heat 1 and ended up 18th. He followed that up with 2 good finishes in Heats 2 & 3, to start 9th in the final. He ended the final in 17th place.

Briggs Junior

Andre Fiorini, currently in 2nd place in the ECKC points standing, qualified 6th. He was running comfortably in the the top 5 in Heat 1, when he broke a header, was DQ’d and awarded last place points. It would be a long day after that, but he still managed 2 Top 10 finishes to start the final in 13th. He had a great run into the Top 5, in the final.

Braxton Terry, 2012 ECKC Briggs Junior Vice-Champion, had a rough go from the outset. He qualified 8th and managed a 7th and 15th in Heats 1 & 2, but sustained a DQ and last place points for an on track incident, in Heat 3. In the final however, he had the race of his life and drove from a 15th place start position to a very commendable 4th place finish. If there was a “Hard Charger Award”, Braxton surely would have been given it.

Victoria Stutsky, made the trip from Winnipeg to compete in her first ever ASN Canadian Nationals. It was a great experience for her and ended up with, a respectable 18th place finish. She will be back, with a little more experience next year.

Briggs Senior

A star studded field of 38 Briggs Senior entries saw Jonathon Treadwell (2013 ECKC Champion & Current ECKC Points Leader) qualify in 8th, a scant .082 off the pole. From there his luck went incredibly bad. Heat 1 saw Jon out in the first corner and awarded last points. Heat 2 & 3 brought 2 Top 5’s and resulted in a 16th starting spot for the final. Jon moved up 5 spots in the final before dropping out with a broken clutch, 4 laps in.

Veteran Marc Stehle joined the K&K Team for the weekend, and had 10th,12th and 14th place finishes in the Heats, but had mechanical issues in the final and pulled off.

“All in all… two 4ths and a 5th with a small contingent of drivers at a major, talent laden event like this is an achievement” …states K&K Team owner Kevin Barrick. “While we have grown accustomed to winning, it’s a little unrealistic to think we can have the luck to win all the time” ..he adds. The K&K Team heads back to Mt. Tremblant in 3 weeks, where they have the points lead and hope to wrap up the ECKC Briggs Senior and Masters Titles. Currently sitting in 2nd, K&K still has a mathematical chance to win Briggs Junior, as well.
