CKN 2014 ECKC Preview: DD2 Masters

The Eastern Canadian Karting Championship is celebrating its fifth season of competition in 2014 and it is looking to be one the best seasons to date. The first of four rounds hits the track this weekend at Mosport International Karting and the CKN will be trackside as part of the CKN Summer Tour. The championship class structure remains the same for 2014 with Rotax Grand Finals Invitations up for grabs in Rotax Junior, Senior, DD2 and DD2 Masters once again. For the ever-growing Briggs & Stratton classes, Florida Winter Tour prize packages are available with more prizes to be announced.

ECKC Officials added Tim Hannan over the off-season as the new Series Director as he intends to grow the numbers on track and the presence of the series across North America. With over 150 drivers expected at Mosport, the series is off to a great start and we hope to see the numbers remain throughout all four events in 2014.

As the official media partner for the Eastern Canadian Karting Championship, CKN has prepared class by class previews for this weekends event along with the championship perspective. With over 150 participants expected at Mosport this weekend it will surely be an action packed event!

Wednesday will feature previews for: Rotax Senior, Rotax Mini-Max, and Briggs & Stratton Jr.

Thursday will feature previews for: Briggs & Stratton Senior, Rotax Junior and Rotax Micro-Max.

Friday will feature previews for: Rotax DD2, Rotax DD2 Masters and Briggs & Stratton Masters.

For those who cannot attend this weekends event, CKN will be covering the event online via our CKN Live page where viewers can watch live timing, see results, view updates, and ask questions to the CKN panel all weekend long. Daily race reports will also come with photo galleries and video interviews from the event.

Rotax DD2 Masters

Reigning terror on the Rotax DD2 Masters division since the ECKC’s inception, Stuart Clark is seeking to defend his title yet again this year, seeking his fourth ECKC championship. The series’ winningest driver will have his hands full in 2014 as he has taken on a campaign in the Canadian Touring Car Championship with Blanchet Motorsports after winning our CKN test day with the team last summer. This weekend especially will be tough for Clark as he is competing on both the kart track and car track on both Saturday and Sunday.

Clarks main championship threats will come from Francis Mondou, and Chris Glover as they look to dethrone him from the ECKC championship podium. Mondou spent most of the winter at the Florida Winter Tour Championship with racing with KMS North America, but has switched to SH Racing for the Canadian season. Vancouver, BC’s Glover is a newcomer to both the DD2 Masters class and ECKC championship but will still be a strong contender as he finally graduates from Rotax Senior.

Former world figure skating champion Elvis Stojko is back for another season and is a podium contender as his race form improves week after week while working the PRO Racing Team. We will also have our eyes on Enrico Bulduc and Michael Brooks as both drivers are karting veterans returning to the spotlight.

This weekend we cannot count out local Paul Carvalho as well. He’s been on the ECKC podium before and after a season off he’s back for another trophy or two.

CKN Championship Contenders:

Stuart Clark: There isn’t much we can say about Clark as he hasn’t missed a beat in the past two years, with the exception of a Prefinal run last year here at Mosport. Pending he has enough time to compete full time in both the ECKC and the CTCC, he will be tough to top again this season.

Francis Mondou: Mondou is a strong competitor and seeing that he is back at home with SH Racing this might be his best chance to win the championship, he just needs to focus and finish every race.

Chris Glover: Chris Glover was a surprise name on the ECKC entry list, but he is in great hands at KMS North America. His veteran leadership will help not only himself but the team as well and expect to see him on the podium throughout the season while challenging Clark for the title.

CKN Dark Horse:

Elvis Stojko: He continues to get better every time we see him and have a feeling 2014 could be his breakout season with podium appearances and the possibility of a victory if the cards fall in the right order. His hard work is paying off and hopefully it will translate to his first win in the ECKC Championship.
